2. Why did people support Hitler and the Nazi Party?
This is a key question in the Rise to Power of Hitler - it is impossible to imagine Hitler and his Nazi party being able to take power without the mass popular support that he enjoyed, particularly after the Great Depression started (although it is important to remember that he and his ideas had become prominent following the Ruhr Crisis and Putsch of 1923 and so we must remember the longer terms aspects of his appeal). |

- What was Hitler’s ideology at this stage? Do matching activity. (Cut up definitions and terms before class. Put into sets Brigette has some done). Write down terms and definitions.
- Turn terms into a Diamond 9 (but there are 10 terms, so make middle layer longer). Discuss and justify.
- Look at the mind-map on p 182 of the Gray text. Redo it on a separate piece of paper. Change around the order of the bubbles to show “rank” (clockwise, most important at top) and use only pictures for each bubble. Add new pictures from the matching activity which you think are important and have not already been included elsewhere. You have 15 minutes. Then glue/ write the original words to your picture mind map (your teacher will give you copies of p 182)
- Plenary: Is ideology enough? Or do you need practical programmes. Discuss relating this to Hitler.
