This unit is organised around a guided inquiry over four lessons and home work. You will need to stay organised, consciously think about every aspect of the process and reflect on the skills used as well as the history learned. Your inquiry will follow these steps:
1. Get an overview
2. Locating and selecting information.
3. Prioritising and evaluating ideas and arguments with your peers.

Read Church section on Vietnam up to the colonial period. Create a diagram for "Pre-colonial Vietnamese History". Make it look something like the guide below and use the same prompts. Then flesh out each point and answer the question: What effect do all these factors have on the national psyche of the Vietnamese?
To better understand the relative locations of colonies, colour in the French colonies on the map below (print a copy). This map will come in useful for adding other colonies as our studies progress.
Now, using the Church text, construct a timeline of colonial activity in Vietnam from 1789 and finish about 1914. Do remember that this timeline could extend to the end of the Vietnam War to include content for the unit "Cold War Conflict in Asia"

Factors leading to colonialism

Over time, the factors leading to colonialism changed. There were stages of imperialism and it is "New Imperialism" which was the phase which propelled France into Indochina. To understand these stages better, complete the worksheet, using the Cowie reading and the information on the worksheet.

2. What do historians identify as the key political, economic, social and cultural motivations / impacts of French actions in Indochina?
ATL: Locating and selecting information using books
You will take one of the following themes: political, social, cultural and economic factors.
Use the Google Doc below which has been filled out (often incorrectly!) for you. In pairs/groups. Make a copy for your class to work on. Take a section and reallocate the information to the correct sections. Then turn all points into bullet points. Then go to the blue box of textbooks and fact check the information, adding, changing or deleting information from the original doc.
Resources:
- Using the variety of textbooks, including your own, practise researching effectively, using contents pages and indexes, to find information for each box (use the google doc below to create a template with headings but no content). For this exercise, do not go to other sources outside of the provided texts.
- Each piece of information needs to be referenced according to MLA 8, as in text citations and in a shared Works Cited List.
- Each student needs to look at a minimum of 4 textbooks.
- Group members must confer to agree on which points to include on the table. Look for consensus among historians. Add alternate perspectives. Aim to have about 5 salient points in each box. No more.
- Each group finds their information adds it to the class google doc of this table.
- Each student saves their own copy in their own notes at the end.
