Assessment
Paper 3 is better known as the 'History Beast'. It is:
- 2.5 hrs long
- 3 essays, approx 50 mins per essay.
- It is the biggest single component of your overall HL grade - weighted at 35%
- The essays are marked in a similar way to the SL essays. However, there is an expectation that you will have more specific knowledge and there is a slightly higher reward for clear lines of argument and the use and evaluation of interpretations. The questions are less thematic and will focus on specific events.
- Study the syllabus content in detail below - you should be able to spot several overlaps with material that may also be examined in Paper 2; bonus!!
Content
Schools select a Region on which to focus (in our case Europe and the Middle East) and then we study three units from that syllabus. In the examination there will be two questions set on each unit and you can answer any three (it is fine to answer two from one unit). Note that you are given a choice of 3 from 6 as they do not expect it to be possible for you to have sufficient knowledge to answer every question in depth - only half of them! The three units you will be studying are:
a) Imperial Russia, Revolutions and the Establishment of the Soviet Union
b) Europe and the First World War
c) European states in the inter-war years
Click on the buttons at the top of this page to find material for use in class for each unit (NB. this website has not been with you for your whole course and so not all material will be present).
