1. ANALYSING: To what extent will Donald Trump change America (& the world)?
a) Categorising/'Chunking'
One of the key skills that you need to develop in Global Perspectives is your ability to analyse and evaluate issues.
"Analyse: Examine (something) methodically and in detail, typically in order to explain and interpret it." (Google Dictionary)
The first key step is to try and identify themes ('sub-headings', 'topics') within an issue that allow you to break it down into chunks. You can then evaluate each in a methodical, manageable way before moving on to making a 'big picture judgment'.
Our topic today is beliefs and politics - in particular, the likely implications of a Trump presidency. In order to analyse the possible impact of Trump on America, we need to identify the 'chunks' or 'themes' that we will use to analyse this issue.

b) Researching and Evaluating
In pairs, you will be given one of the three main 'chunks' of life in America that Trump says he will change. Your job will be to:
i) Find out exactly what Trump says he will do with this 'chunk' of American life
ii) Investigate what various commentators/experts' views on his policies are. You will also need to think about how reliable each source is to help you decide which view you think is most persuasive.
iii) Evaluate (come to a judgment) about whether:
- Trump will actually be able to make the change that he is suggesting
- Whether any change would be positive/negative for America
Part B of the Task Sheet will give you a structure for this activity. Click on the issue you have been allocated below for resources.
