1. Germany in 1933 - The Consolidation of Power
The extract below is from 'In the Garden of Beasts' by Erik Larson. It is a biography of William Dodd's family, who arrived in Berlin in 1933 as a result of his appointment as the US ambassador to Germany. This extract is useful to us as it gives an insight into the day to day experiences of the German people during the initial consolidation of power, raising some troubling evidence about the extent of (and reasons for) popular support for the new regime. It also challenges our view that the democratic nations were necessarily troubled by the Nazi attitudes from the outset of their regime.
The extract focuses on the experience of Martha, William Dodd's daughter, who was in her 20s when she arrived in Berlin with the family. |
