0. Introduction to the Native Americans
As a class, we are going to explore the theme of migration and discovery through two case studies; The settlement of the West, The Slave Trade. The first series of lessons are designed to explore the culture of Native American Tribes in the American West.
Open the ppt. for today's lesson.
a) On this Google Doc try and work out; What is the picture showing, who might be in it, when might it have been taken or created, how do you think it links to the idea of migration or discovery?
b) With partner try and work out the answers to the 6 questions on this ppt.
c) Now add to the Google doc the keyword and the letter that matches that definition.
d) Read through the 4 descriptions of the most common tribes in America, try and answer the questions.

2. Were the Sioux a bunch of savages?
a) Adding detail: use the clip to develop your buffalo section.
b) Key skill! Inferring from a source (teacher p/point)
i) What can we learn from the source about the Sioux's relationship with the Buffalo? ii) Is this source useful to a historian? Explain. c) Savage or civiised? i) Read the background of 'Horse' (the character from the video). Identify 5-10 things he would have found savage about the Sioux tribe when he first met them. ii) Now look back through your research & understanding. For each of the 'savage', things you have identified in the source, see if you can identify a way of defending them: - are they really different 'deep' down'? - is there something about their environment that makes it impossible to do anything else?
