OVERVIEW:
Mao wanted to show how China could become and remain an independent state. He wanted people to realise that communism was the vehicle by which this could be attained. During the Mao period, relations between China and the USSR and the USA fluctuated. The rifts and rapprochements both reflected and created Cold War tensions.

3. Once you have finished the worksheet, summarise Chinese foreign policy relationships in 70 words exactly, using a grid created by yourself which has 10 boxes across and 7 boxes down. Put a word in each box to keep you on track.

2. Now, using the same 2 documents, draw a line graph showing Chinese relations with the USA and the USSR. You should have years on the x axis (the horizontal), and level of tension on the y axis (vertical). Chart the progression and pattern of tensions and periods of reconciliation using the 2 documents as reference. Make the USA one colour and the USSR another colour.
